Read Numbers 28:1–10
Questions from the Scripture text: Who spoke to whom in Numbers 28:1? Whom was he to command (Numbers 28:2)? About what? When were they to be brought near? What burning (NKJ, “offering made by fire”) were they to bring near as the timely ascension (NKJ, “regular burnt offering,” Numbers 28:3)? When were they to bring these near (Numbers 28:4)? What tribute (NKJ, “grain offering”) were they to bring near with it (Numbers 28:5)? Where had this been ordained (Numbers 28:6, cf. Exodus 29:38–41)? And what pouring out (NKJ, “drink offering”) were they to bring near (Numbers 28:7)? What were they to do in the evening (Numbers 28:8)? What was this offering? When would this be doubled (Numbers 28:9-10)?
What does a new age in redemptive history call for? Numbers 28:1–10 looks forward to the hearing of God’s Word, publicly read, in the holy assembly on the coming Lord’s Day. In these ten verses of Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit teaches us that we must keep worshiping morning and evening every day, and Sabbath by Sabbath, until redemption has been fulfilled, and the new creation comes.
As the people are about to enter the land, the Lord is preparing them for the calendar that they will observe in the land, when they are no longer a wandering people but a planting and harvesting people. But first, the Lord establishes that the most fundamental calendar, the one that man has had from the creation, must continue: morning and evening worship every single day, and the consecration of the Sabbath day over and above the consecration of every other day. Thus, they were to ascend, with tribute, coming near to the Lord, Who will be pleased with them. And He will be pleased not because He enjoys mutton, bread, and wine, but because Christ, His Son, was the substance of all of these offerings. So, too, we must come to Him—morning and evening every day, and in a doubly consecrated way on the Lord’s Day, coming only through Christ!
What is your habit for morning and evening worship every day? What is your habit for morning and evening worship on the Lord’s Day? By what actions can you come through Christ? By what attitude?
Sample prayer: Lord, thank You for creating us to worship You and for redeeming us to worship You. Grant that we would keep Your creation calendar, now transformed for us by redemption. Grant that we would come to You, morning and evening, every day, through Jesus Christ. And make us to keep the Lord’s Day, Your Sabbath, by drawing near to You all that day through Christ, we ask in His Name, AMEN!
